Happy Holidays from JDRF!
|
Each holiday brings its own set of challenges if you have diabetes. Here are some ideas for enjoying treats, courtesy of Lea Ann Holzmeister, R.D., C.D.E., a pediatric nutritionist at Phoenix Children's Hospital, Tempe, Arizona.
Make a candy plan:
Instead of eating it all at once, take a reasonable approach: Eat one piece a day at snack time, replacing some of your carbohydrate with the candy.
Make a deal with your parents to trade candy for something you'd rather have—maybe a quarter for each piece.
Prepare for parties:
Inform teachers about your diabetes and explain how you don't get free rein with sweets.
Encourage party organizers to plan for nonsweet activities and treats. They can de-emphasize sugar for everyone!
Don't pass on the pie:
Holiday traditions are important. Adjust your carbohydrate intake to enjoy them.
Plan ahead to adjust your insulin and eating schedule based on big holiday mealtimes.
Try new recipes for old family favorites. Use artificial sweeteners and other fat- and carb-reducing tricks available in a wide variety of cookbooks.
