It's Saturday afternoon, and since the weather's gross you hit the mall with some friends. After cruising the CD's and remembering to buy your mom a birthday card, your stomach lets out a few gurgles and you can feel your blood sugar start to drop.

Food court! Your friends take off. The smells from the cookie shop and the pizza stop invite you to chow, but you have more to think about before you choose. What can you eat that will satisfy your stomach but also fit in with your diabetes plan?

Smart Choices
When you think about it, the mall food court is not a bad place to be stuck for a meal. You've got choices. But just so you know, nutrition nightmares are everywhere, like the high-fat, high-calorie, triple-decker cheeseburger and jumbo French fries.

You probably know that because you have diabetes, the carbohydrates you eat, like sugars and breads or pasta, will raise your blood sugar. But it's important to realize that the fat and other calories you eat also affect your blood sugar, because they might affect how quickly your body absorbs all the nutrients you eat. That's why it's important to try to limit foods that are super fatty or really high in calories. But there are plenty of smart options at the food court. Here are a few places to start...
