With help from your care provider, you can |
If you will be crossing time zones, there are formulas you can use to figure how to readjust your body and diabetes plan. Some people recommend counting the number of time zones you are crossing and dividing by 24. If you are going West, you increase your insulin by that much; going East, you decrease it by that much.
Another thing to try is taking regular insulin every four hours until your body has adjusted to the time change. Then, switch back to your normal routine.
Of course you should never adjust your diabetes plan without consulting your care provider. Give yourself plenty of time before a big trip or event — several weeks, if possible — to consult with him or her and work out a plan that is tailored specifically to you.
Happy traveling!
