Bethany, 13
I was diagnosed with diabetes when I was 8, and I am 13 now. I am on  the insulin pump. One way that my friends could help me is reminding me to take my blood sugar at lunch (at school) or at their house. Also they can remind me to put in a bolus. Also, if I am having high/low blood sugar symptoms, they can ask me if i need insulin, a teacher, a parent, an adult, food, etc.  Posted 4/27/06

Carsen, 12, Texas
My friends are really supportive of me. Some of them are hyperglycemic, so they sort of know what it's like and the people I have known forever know when I'm low or high and make me test. They also have special drinks and such for me at their parties.  Posted 4/27/06

Emily, 13
I was diagnosed with diabetes right after Christmas. As soon as I went to the hospital, the first thing I did was get a hold of my friends on the telephone. Now, every day, one of my friends will come with me to do my insulin at lunch time. If I have a low blood sugar, they remind me to test after treating, and they even set up a buddy system to hang with me in case I pass out! So far, my friends have been really supportive, and they haven't treated me any different than what I was before. They are so great!  Posted 4/27/06

My friends help me by taking an interest in diabetes and helping me remember to check my blood sugar and take my shots. If you have a freind who thinks you're weird because of the special things you have to do, that's not a real friend at all. My friends I thank are Kenzie, Haley, Taylor, Sam, and Jessica. Thanks guys!  Posted 4/27/06
