The Pump Diaries

Chris, 14, Ohio Chris was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes at age 5.  About three years ago, he switched from taking one insulin shot per day to about four, in order to manage his blood sugars better.  "My new insulin therapy gives me more flexibility when I eat, but I also take a shot every time I put something in my mouth," he says.

Despite the daily rigors of diabetes, Chris is able to do the things he enjoys, as long as he plans ahead.  "I play baseball, basketball, ride my bike, rollerblade, and play with my dog, Max.  I am also a straight-A student and am part of my church youth group.  It's important to me to just be a regular kid, but diabetes affects everything I do."
