Will, 8, California
Will started on the pump at the age of 3 and has been pumping for over five years now. '"The pump is better than taking shots all day,'" he says. "It is easier, but you still have to put a needle in every three days. I like it because I can eat when I want to and can even have some treats sometimes." Will's blood sugar control has improved a great deal since he went on the pump, and he has much more freedom and flexibility. His mom, Kathy, agrees that the best part about pumping is that Will can eat when and what he wants. "We no longer have to worry about exact carbohydrate amounts per meal, or eat at certain times of the day," she says. "For me, the best part is seeing my son live a relatively normal life without the swings in blood sugar he often had with injections."
Will and his mom shared their story in the Winter 2004 issue of Countdown for Kids magazine.
